Darko Jorgic and 1. FC Saarbrücken TT are eager for more after winning the first German championship in the club’s history. We have interviewed the 22 year old Slovenian player just a few weeks before the new season is up. In our interview we touched upon the success in the Liebherr TTBL final, his personal résumé and future ambitions.
It has been two months now since the Liebherr TTBL final and the first championship title of 1. FC Saarbrücken TT. How long did it take you to realize your success?
The TTBL title was one of my dreams when I signed my first contract in the league so I was really happy that we won this final. I had to sleep it on it for a few nights after I came back home to completely realize our success.
Many expect Saarbrücken to dominate the league in the upcoming years. In your opinion, what currently contributes to the team's strength? And why will Saarbrücken win the title in 2020/21 again?
On the one hand, we have a very strong team and we are aiming to win new titles. On the other hand, we have a great team spirit – that's an important reason for our excellent performances and the title as well.
Shang Kun was one of the players who particularly surprised us in the last season. How is he as a person? Which role does he fulfil within the team?
Shang Kun is a really nice guy. Everyone from our team likes him a lot. He truly is a strong player and he knows how to handle big matches. He was very helpful for our team and we believed in him all the time – in the final he proved us right.
You will first encounter vice champion TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen in the new season. How important do you estimate the match to be for the course of the season?
It is always important to start a new season with a win so we will of course try to win this first match against Ochsenhausen. We know how strong Ochsenhausen is so we have to be best prepared for the beginning of the season and try to perform well.
You have been increasingly successful, in the last season you played a 14-5 balance-sheet. At both finals, however, you were defeated. How do you personally reflect the last season?
Indeed I played a really successful season but in the finals I didn’t show my best table tennis. I have to improve mentally for big, meaningful matches like the TTBL final or the cup final. I hope that I will have a chance to show a better performance in the future – at best already in the new season.
You're considered as one of the top players in Europe and won a silver medal at the Europe Top 16 in Montreux – with just 22 years of age. Are you already a complete player? If not: Where is your highest potential to further develop yourself and your skills?
I had a great season on international tournaments. I excelled at the qualification for the Olympic Games and after that I played some really good tournaments like the Top 16. But in my opinion every player, even the oldest and most experienced, can improve somewhere so I have to say that I am not at my ultimate level of performance yet. In particular, I have to improve my forehand skills and of course the first balls like serves and receive.
