It was a bitter evening for TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen: Despite leading twice in front of their home crowd in the Dr. Hans Liebherr Hall, Ochsenhausen lost to French side Stella Sport La Romagne on Friday night 2-3. The almost safe move into the quarterfinals of the Table Tennis Champions League Men (TTCLM) is suddenly in danger before the final group match against SPG Walter Wels. “We have stumbled in Ostrava and have now been punished for it, we have to blame ourselves,” said TTF President Kristijan Pejinovic.

It had all started so well in the “final” against the previously tied second from France. Simon Gauzy scored the lead with a 3-1 win against 19-year-old Wei Shiaho from China. And Gauzys team mate Hugo Calderano was on the way up to 2-0 as well. After a quick 2-0 lead, however, the Brazilian lost the thread against the Frenchman Chen Tianyuan – until Chen eventuelly won the match after saving two match balls.

After the re-built lead by Jakub Dyjas, who had no problems with Brice Ollivier, Gauzy also had a tough time with top-performing Chen in the top single. On top, the native Asian was very lucky with several net and edge balls in the fith game. In the final encounter against Wei, Calderano finally suffered the same fate as against Chen. Again Ochsenhausen’s number two started well and went into the lead, but it was his opponent who rejoiced in the end – this time also over the away win of his team, which passes by Ochsenhausen and is the new top of the group.

Ochsenhausen, however, falls back to second place and is almost condemned to win on December 21 in the last group match. “In any case, we must now beat Wels,” says Pejinovic, “then we are ahead, but as group second have to expect a strong quarterfinal opponent like Orenburg or Düsseldorf.” Should Ochsenhausen lose again, they have to rely on La Romagne. If, on the other hand, TTC Ostrava 2016 win the parallel game, Ochsenhausen might only finish third, ending up in ETTU Cup.
