2017 runner-up Borussia Düsseldorf beat Polish side K.S. Dekorglass Dzaildowo 3-1 and book their spot in the quarterfinals of the Table Tennis Champions League Men (TTCLM). Man of the match is Timo Boll.
On Wednesday evening Timo Boll showed once again how important he is for Borussia Düsseldorf – even at the age of 36 years. With two points against Polish side K.S. Dekorglass Dzialdowo the European Record Champion and World Cup runner-up paved the way to the 3-1 home victory, thanks to which Düsseldorf are prematurely qualified for the quarterfinal of the Table Tennis Champions League Men (TTCLM).
It was already at the beginning of the meeting at Düsseldorf’s ARAG CenterCourt that Boll made a straight 3-0 victory against Pavel Fertikowski. Afterwards the match winner of the first leg Kristian Karlsson faced Dzialdowo’s top player Kenta Matsudaira – and found his master in the Japanese. Despite a strong performance of Düsseldorf’s number two, Matsudaira won 3-1. “Kristian has played an incredibly good first game. You can build on that”, said coach Danny Heister.
After the break Anton Källberg met Jiri Vlrablik, against whom the young Swede had to accept a five-set defeat in the first leg. That evening, however, Källberg turned the tables and won after five scarce games. The rest was the class of a Timo Boll, who was able to beat Matsudaira 3-0, too. “I have a good record against Kenta anyway, I can not remember ever having lost a game against him. So he probably has a little trauma when I'm on the other side. But of course, against such a world-class man you still have to go to the limit”, said Boll.
Whether Düsseldorf finish the preliminary round as a group winner, will be decided on Friday. “The door to the group win is open, now we are looking to France, where Hennebont will hopefully win against Roskilde on Friday and then give us the first place”, said Borussia’s manager Andreas Preuß. In the last group match Düsseldorf face Roskilde Bordtennis BTK61 in Sweden on December 21. On Friday, TTF Liebherr Ochsenhausen can be the third Bundesliga club to enter the quarterfinal after Düsselorf and Saarbrücken.
